In New Jersey it Pays to Use Renewable Energy

We all care for our planet, and are concerned at the fast depleting resources. Yet, sometimes we feel that there is nothing that can be done by us at an individual level to help remedy the situation.

After all, we have a standard of living that we uphold, and no one is going to make us live like cave men again. That’s the wrong idea and attitude. But just as each drop counts towards making an ocean huge, each individual’s effort counts towards saving the planet’s resources.

As the state realizes this truth, it is making new rules and regulations which reward the individual who cares for the planet and uses green energy. No one wants you to give up your lifestyle; all that is required here is some change in how you use power, and what power you use.

In New Jersey, there is a Property Tax exemption for individuals who use renewable energy technologies. The legislation came into effect in October 2008, and primarily addressed on-site energy generation systems that used renewable energy technologies.

These technologies can include Landfill Gas, Wind, Biomass, Hydroelectric, Geothermal Electric, Fuel Cells, Geothermal Heat Pumps, Resource Recovery, Tidal Energy, and Wave Energy. While it may be difficult for an individual to harness some of these technologies, wind turbines and solar fuel cells can easily be used in homes. These incentives are available not only to the residential sector, but also to the commercial and industrial sectors.

It is easier for larger concerns, to set up green energy technologies which not only cut their power bills, but also help the company gain government favor. Particularly in light of the fact that 100% of the value added by the green energy system, is exempt from tax. It really adds up to dollars saved in the long run. This can affect a company’s bottom line and long-term profits greatly.

To avail yourself of this property tax exemption, you will need to get a certificate from a local assessor.  A year after this certificate is given to you, you will see the exemptions come into play. There are a set of technical qualifications and criteria that must be met and adhered to, in order to qualify for the property tax exemption.

If you are looking forward to doing something cleaning up the environment, and save money by doing it, this is one option to consider.

I like the incentives to increase the use of renewable energy, but it really seems like a pain on the … to get these rebates.

This all seems a little complicated to me, why can’t they just give you savings up front. Jumping through loops is what turns people off.

@Kathyfb I agree completely. Unfortunately, it is how it is right now and the more people who do take advantage of it, the better. Hopefully, clean energy incentives will continue to improve, and perhaps simplify as well.

Even though the up-front cost of a solar system is high, the long term benefits will be there for a long time. There are a number of DIY kits available that can reduce the cost quite a bit. We only have one planet, and this will help to keep it green, and save money at the same time.

hopefully this is just the start and that more states and countries will follow suit and give people an incentive to take the first step. Although we should not need incentives to make our enviroment greener, most times it is just the initial outlay that prevents us.

I live in Arizona so we have an abundance of sun here. I have solar hot water and I got a 25% tax cut. I also use a diy home generator that is saving me about 30%. But here we only get a 25% cut no matter how green we go. You would think in a state like ours solar would be everywhere. Keep up the “good green work” everyone.
