Marblehead Municipal Light Department in Massachusetts offers solar rebates to residents who install solar power systems at their residences.  This rebate, along with federal incentives, makes photovoltaic systems more affordable to the masses.

The requirements for Marblehead Municipal Light Department Solar Rebate Program are the same as the requirements of Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC), meaning the equipment should be new, compliant with IEEE standards, and UL-listed.  The inverters, modules, and production meters must be included on the California Energy Commission’s list of qualified equipment.

Additionally, all products must have a five-year warranty, modules must have a 20-year performance warranty, inverters must have a 10-year warranty, revenue-grade production meters must have a two-year warranty, and mounting equipment must have at least a five-year warranty.

To qualify for the solar rebate program, the solar photovoltaic system must be installed in compliance with local, state and federal building codes, and a Massachusetts-certified electrician must complete all electrical work.  The solar power installation must have at least a five-year warranty against defective workmanship, breakdown or degradation in the electric output of more than 15% from the manufacturer’s rated electrical output.

The amount of the rebate will be based on the solar power system’s size.  For residential customers, the rebates have a maximum of $20,000 per installation. The current rebate rate for residential PV systems is $1.00 per watt.  For households with moderate incomes, the rebate rate is $1.25 per watt.

Applicants for the solar power rebate must be the future owner of the PV solar system and the end-user of the power generated by it.  The applicant must also show that 50% of the power the PV system generates will be used behind the meter.  The Renewable Energy Credits (RECs ) of the photovoltaic solar system will belong to the system owner.  The individual can do whatever he/she wants with the RECs.
