Northwest Solar Coop Green Tag Incentive

If you’re the owner of a solar or wind power system located in Oregon, Washington, Montana, or Idaho, then you might be entitled to monetary incentive and REC for the energy your system generates.  All you need to do is to apply with the Northwest Solar Coop.  Once your application is accepted you’ll be asked to sign a contract with the coop.  After you’re done with all the paperwork, the NWSC will start paying for your RECs.

RECs, or Green Tags, are the environmental features of a solar or wind power system, which include the capability to offset carbon dioxide production.  Solar and wind power producers can earn extra income by selling their Green Tags.  The price tag changes each year, within the range of two to ten cents per kilowatt hour.

The contract with the Northwest Solar Coop does not a go for a fixed duration, but the production-based payments will continue up to December 31, 2009.  The renewal of the contract after said date will depend on 3 Degrees Energy, which is the buyer of the Green Tags.

To qualify, the photovoltaic or wind energy system must be located in Montana, Idaho, Washington, or Oregon.  It can be of any size, with a maximum generating capacity of up to 50 kW and must be connected to the power grid.  Take note that the quantity they can purchase is limited so not every application can be accepted.

The Northwest Solar Coop is a non-profit service run by Solar Oregon, which aims at providing public education and community outreach to persuade Oregonians to use solar energy.  Its Green Tag purchase program is aimed at buying RECs from private sellers in the region, and selling them by bulk to 3 Degrees Energy.  At present, the coop’s members across the northwest are earning from the collective sales of the Green Tags.  People can also support solar installations by buying the Green Tags from 3 Degrees Energy.

If you’re interested in this program, you can check out Northwest Solar Coop’s web site, fill up their application form there and send it in.  After that you’ll just have to wait to see if the coop accepts your application or not.
