Palmetto Clean Energy (PaCE) has launched a green-power program designed to encourage the use of renewable energy in South Carolina.
PaCE offers premium payments for electricity generated by customer-owned, grid-tied solar and wind-energy systems. Geothermal and small-scale hydro systems are also scheduled to be added to the list of approved systems.
This is the result of a collaboration between Duke Energy Carolinas, Progress Energy Carolinas, South Carolina Electric & Gas Company, the South Carolina Energy Office and the South Carolina Office of Regulatory Staff.
PaCE was created in 2007. However, the program was first launched in April 2008. The premium payments may vary depending on renewable technology in use. In order to qualify for these premium payments the following conditions need to be met:
A small solar photovoltaic (PV) or wind system generating five kilowatts (kW) or less.
The system must be interconnected to the electrical grid per the terms of the electric utility’s interconnection agreement.
An executed power purchase agreement (PPA) with the utility that will receive the energy produced needs to be in place.
Energy supplied must be to the South Carolina power grid.
The system may not be part of a net-metering program.
