Former Dallas Cowboy Syd Kitson dreamed of building a community running entirely on solar power. This ambitious endeavor has already passed the planning stage, and actions are underway for it to be approved for construction. Florida will soon to be the home of the world’s first community that will run on solar power 24/7. Yup, you read that right. It is the developer’s plan to make the community run on solar energy even during the night.
Dubbed as “Babcock Ranch,” the self-contained city will have its own retail stores, medical facilities, schools and around 8,000 residential units. A green city will not be complete without bike paths. The developer stated that the solar power will cost each resident around 30 cents per day. I hope more developers can see that going green is the way of the future.
Actually Babcock Ranch is already an environmental treasure, and was so, even before this development was planned. Over the years, the Babcock family has maintained this tract of land and its natural features, which include swamps, cypress domes, and vast open pastures. It is located near Fort Myers, Florida.
The green city will occupy an estimated 17,000 acres of land, more than 300 acres of which will be allocated for solar panels. These panels will produce enough electricity to make the community independent from the state’s power grid. Florida Power and Light Company will have the task of running this solar power system.
This development came at a time when the whole world is looking for ways to solve the global environmental problems such as global warming and searching for sustainable clean energy. If this becomes a success, Babcock Ranch will be a model city that will serve as an example all across the world.
Hopefully, the plans for Babcock Ranch will materialize soon. It is also estimated that at least 20,000 permanent jobs will be created. (Source: PR News Wire). The existing business operations in the area, such as sod farming, ecotours, cattle ranching, timber cultivation, and rock mining, will still be honored by Kitson and Partners. It is their goal to maintain this natural treasure and all its beauty. In these times of crisis, the world surely needs more green projects from the minds of people like Syd Kitson.
Babcock Ranch will surely be a welcome break from all the urban developments that are sprouting all over Florida. With its natural treasures, and its new cleanand sustainable power source, many cities are likely to follow its example, and become green, once it is fully operational.

My Life Thinkings last blog post..What you are going to do in the Dark for one Earth Hour?
Hi, thanks very much for your feedback and for your rating. I hope to see you here more often in the future
This is really good news. There’s an entire city in Abu Dhabi that is going to be totally sustainably powered, but it’s good to see the idea catching on in the Western world too.
This will be a good experiment to see if solar power can hold up to the needs of a large infrastructure. I think more people will invest in solar power and other alternative energy methods once the price is more affordable to the general public.
