Suntech Power has signed a deal with the Canadian solar installer Pure Energies to supply 17 megawatts worth of photovoltaic panels in 2010.  This is a sign that the Chinese solar panel manufacturer is serious in its bid to dominate the North American market.

Based in Ontario, Pure Energies is a solar installer that also leases and operates solar power systems.  They will market and use Suntech solar panels for their solar photovoltaic systems.  Both parties signed the memorandum of understanding on December 1, 2009.  The value of the deal has not been disclosed to the public but will be in effect from 2010 to 2011.

Solar power companies expect growth in the demand for solar power systems in 2010 after a disappointing 2009 when the prices of solar panels went down due to the global financial crisis.  Solar installers saw decreases in their business as well.

The Pure Energies deal will result in the creation of 100 new jobs in 2010 as the solar installer will begin deploying solar power systems in January.  The solar installer is relatively new to the business and will focus on home systems.  Pure Energies hopes to establish its brand name, starting in Ontario.

In a related news, another Chinese solar company — Trina Solar Ltd — announced it will be supplying eight megawatts of solar modules to the Chinese market at a predetermined price.  The first of the shipments started last November and will continue through the end of this year or until all eight megawatts of solar panels are delivered.

Trina Solar also got the Chinese government’s approval for a two megawatt project, which is under the Golden Sun program.  The program’s goal is to install at least 20 megawatts of solar power in every province in China.

Momentum is definitely strong for both solar installers and manufacturers.  Companies are expecting the demand to rise in 2010 after a disappointing year. 2009 saw the price of photovoltaic solar panels drop by up to 50% because of oversupply and the difficulty in getting financing for new solar projects.

Suntech expects the shipments in 2010 to rise by at least 75% over the 2009 numbers.  Judging by the deals both companies have received, they will likely reach their targeted goals.  Suntech also expects prices to stabilize in the first quarter of 2010.
