TIME named Solar Shingle the 13th best invention of 2009. Dow Chemical Co. developed the Solar Shingle, a type of roof shingle that doubles as a solar panel.

In September 2008, my power bill was $625.79. When I opened the bill I just about blew a gasket, and out of pure frustration I began thinking about how to reduce this massive monthly payment. I changed out all the light bulbs to CFL. I went from three computer monitors to two. I lowered the temperature on the water heater by about 20 degrees. But those steps were nothing compared to what I found available right on my roof.

There are many applications for solar power, from your humble calculator, to chargers for cell phones and iPods, to automobiles using panels to top up batteries. Solar panels can even be found on road side signs where it can be impractical to run an electrical cable.

A new development in solar power technology can turn wasted space into an energy source. The transparent thin film barrier that’s currently being used to protect flat TVs from moisture might hold the key for the development of flexible solar shingles in the future.
